PANTONE selects their Color of the Year after their colour experts conduct intense research. PANTONE’s experts examine the entertainment industry, view art collections and meet artists, travel, and understand evolving socio-economic conditions.

Get Inspired by the Colour of the Year 2022

According to Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams

Every year, design experts predict the colour trends that will dominate the upcoming year. These trends are influenced by the fashion, interior design, and overall mood of the moment. Experts travel far and wide, visiting trade shows and doing extensive research to come up with the perfect colour. Once it’s announced, the colour of the year dominates interior design trends, and is splashed on walls and cupboards, featuring in furniture and accessories.

With that amount of pressure, it is no easy feat to predict the next year’s trending palette. This year, the process to determine the next big colour trends had to adjust as designers worked virtually to find the next major trend. The director of colour marketing and development at Benjamin Moore described this process to AD as “more of an inward-looking process than other years.”

Despite all the challenges they faced, the experts at Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have announced their respective colours of 2022 – landing in quite a similar place!

Benjamin Moore – October Mist

Bedroom with October Mist walls

“Make room for creativity. Evoking the silver-green stem of a flower, October Mist creates a canvas for other colours – and your imagination – to blossom.”

Benjamin Moore’s selection for colour of the year is October Mist, a gentle shade of sage green. This colour does not overwhelm, but allows for a multitude of colour combinations. The experts felt it was important that the colour was versatile to work in different spaces and colour palettes. They took inspiration from the stems of flowers that serve as the base to many different colour combinations.

Visit the Benjamin Moore website for more information, and watch their video announcement to see the entire colour palette for 2022.

Sherwin Williams – Evergreen Fog

Office with Evergreen fog walls

“Soothing, subtle, and a perfect shade to freshen up any space. Evergreen Fog SW 9130 is a versatile and calming hue, a chameleon color of gorgeous green-meets-gray, with just a bit of blue.”

Nature and versatility inspired the experts at Sherwin Williams as well. They selected the shade Evergreen Fog as their colour of the year. This colour has many of the same characteristics as October Mist, prioritizing subtlety and working with several other colours. However, the tone of Evergreen Fog is slightly deeper and grey when compared to October Mist.

Watch the video announcement and visit the Sherwin Williams website to view their entire 2022 Colour Palette.

How to Style Dark Floors in Your Home

Dark floors create a dramatic, chic look throughout a home when they’re styled correctly. When done wrong, dark floors can make a room feel claustrophobic, heavy, and sometimes even dated. Choosing the right furniture, paint, and accents to go along with dark floors is essential to achieve the right overall look and feel in your home.

Furniture

Furniture pieces should typically be a few shades lighter than dark floors. To create a harmonized look, choose furniture that has the same overall undertone. Lighter matching furniture will create a sense of openness while complementing the look of the dark floors. Pale wood can also add visual contrast to break up your space.

If you’re not looking for any contrast and want a cohesive, elegant look throughout your house, choose furniture that matches the colour of your floors. For instance, if you decide on upholstered chairs, find some with wooden legs that match the colour of your floors and then freshen things up with a lighter fabric.

Choosing to mix and match your furniture is also an option. A dark dining room table with light chairs gives the best of both worlds, without distracting from the beauty of your dark floors. If you do mix and match, keep in mind that light furniture will stand out the most. Ensure that the lighter furniture pieces you choose are your favourite ones.

Walls

Home with TORLYS Leather tile Novara black floors

The standard design rule is dark floors, light walls. White or off-white paint will open up your room and give your dark floor a lift. You can maximize your white space by making your trims and mouldings thicker, allowing you to paint your walls a darker hue without losing any brightness.

Consider the furniture you own or plan on purchasing when deciding on your paint colour. If your furniture is already colourful, stick to neutral wall colours to avoid any clashing. For white furntire, paint your walls or an accent wall a bold colour, such as a bright green. Delicate touches from light hues like light blue or lavender can complement dark flooring and are a more subtle way to add some colour.

Accessories and Accents

A rug can add some colour and style to your space. It can act like a piece of art or centerpiece for your space. We recommend choosing the contrast between your rug and floors depending on how much you want your rug to pop from the rest of the room. If you need to brighten up a room, choose a light rug.

Leather, velvet and steel accents can complement a dark floor and give an area a soft, muddy or masculine feel. For window treatments, keep them light and translucent— allow as much natural light in a room with a dark floor to make it feel spacious. And in the kitchen, white cabinetry and countertops will make the room feel airy.

Brighten up your home with leafy plants and flowers. Put a vase of bright flowers on your kitchen counter or in the middle of your dining room table and your room will automatically gain some life.

Make sure to design to your space properly when you have dark floors to avoid a claustrophobic, dated look. With the right furniture, paint colours and accents, you can create a beautiful, modern space with dark floors.

Reasons to Renovate in the Fall

People tend to associate the warmer months with starting a household project but, the truth is, fall might be the best season to do renovations. Although the days may be shorter, there is plenty of daylight this time of year. With hot summers, cold winters, and wet springs, Canada’s fall weather won’t melt, freeze, or rain all over your tools and materials.

Why It’s Best to Renovate in the Fall

Beyond giving you more time to enjoy the summer, there are many benefits to renovating in the fall.

Weather

Weather makes a major impact on home renovations. Nobody likes spending a beautiful day sweating buckets while doing renovations or moving material in icy weather. Fall is still warm enough and without the aggressive weather conditions like high heat, strong wind, precipitation, frost, or humidity.

Timing

With fewer contractors available in the summer, your renovation could end up taking longer than expected if you don’t pick the right time. It’s also important to keep in mind product delays can happen, setting your timeline back and ruining your schedule. The benefit to starting renovations in the fall is that most contractors are entering their off-season and are more likely able to work on your preferred start date.

Pricing

The high demand for contractors in the busy spring and summer season means higher cost for goods and services. Materials can cost more in the spring and summer than in the fall and winter. You can save money by renovating in the fall since contractors might offer lower rates for their work during the off-season.

Seasonal Sales

There are many great sales to take advantage of in the fall. End-of-Summer sales, Black Friday sales, and the pre-Christmas sales can help save money or give you more room to spend on renovations.

Possible Fall Renovations

Autumn means warm nights by the fire, baking cookies and watching movies with your loved ones. But before having people over, it’s worth sure updating your interior décor to something that makes you proud.

There are small, easy renovations that can be done in the fall that will make a big difference and refresh your space. If you choose to undergo bigger renovations, like adding a new bathroom or upgrading your kitchen, you can increase your home’s value and make it beautiful for years to come.

Upgrades to do around your home in the fall:

  • Paint your walls and your cabinets
  • Update your light fixtures
  • Buy new furniture, or even just some new throws and pillows
  • Replace your floors

Replacing your Floors in the Fall

Floors are the foundation of your home! If you are looking to undergo a flooring renovation this fall, remember that flooring is critical to set the tone for your home’s colour palette and sense of decorating style. Be sure to choose flooring that will both perform well in your home as well as look good.

No matter the upgrades you take on during the fall, rest assured that getting renovations done before the winter season hits will ensure your home is ready for the chilly months ahead. The more you complete before winter arrives, the more you can be sure that the time spent indoors during those long winter months will be time enjoyed.

How to Style Light Floors in Your Home

Light floors open rooms up to make them feel bigger and brighter, creating a contemporary, artistic style to a home. They’re popular in Scandinavian interior design, are less sensitive to sunlight and show less dent and scratches than their darker counterparts.

Since pale floors aren’t used as often as dark floors, people are unsure of how to style them and find it difficult to design their space with them. But we’re here to tell you not to shy away from light floors. With the right paint, furniture, and understanding of different wood shades, you’ll be able to find the right light floors for you.

Pale Floors to Suit Your Walls

If you love the colour of your floor and want to keep your space light and airy, consider painting your walls at least two shades darker or lighter from your floors. This will prevent the two surfaces from blending in together while keeping it fresh.

TORLYS Laminate Colossia floors in Denali Oak

If you’re looking to add some pops of colour, you can try going the darker route. The great thing about light wooden floors is that you can use darker, dramatic paint without making the room look small and enclosed.

Take paint samples home with you and see how they look on your walls at different times of the day and to see how they look next to your floors. Comparing a picture to an in-store sample just isn’t as reliable because a room with a southern exposure will make a wall look brighter and lighter while a room with a northern exposure has walls that look darker and duller.

Choose the Right Colours

When selecting an accent colour for your pale floors, follow the feel of your floor. If your flooring has cool hues to it, select accents that are cooler. Blues, bright greens, purples, and grey-greens are all considered cold tones. You can also bring in white furniture with blue undertones to create a cool feeling and looking area.

TORLYS Laminate Fjord in Aurlands Oak

Pale floors with warmer hues work well with warm colours such as soft white. These colours include golds, yellows, oranges, and reds. You can also make green into a warmer colour by adding yellow to it. If the feel of your floor and your accent colours don’t match, your light hardwood could actually make your walls look dull. To find out the true hue of your floor, put a clean white sheet of paper to make the undertones of your floor pop. Check online resources to find out what the latest colour trends are and to find inspiration for warm, comforting hues and bright colour pops.

Use the Right Wood Accents

TORLYS Laminate Park Lane in Venice Oak

If your existing accents and furniture are a different hue or grain of wood than the light hardwood floor you want, never fear, you can make it work. Wood with different finishes can go together, we just recommend you follow these general guidelines.

  1. Before you select your new hardwood floor, look at the wood in your home. What species is it? Pick a floor that is in the same wood family to create a cohesive look. Light wood has a more modern feel than darker wood such as cherry, so try to keep the mood of the wood consistent and your room will come together.
  2. When it comes to matching grain, here’s the rule: do or don’t! You should either include multiple grains of wood in your space or stick to one. Avoid having one area of the room with different grains of wood and the rest of the area featuring only one.
  3. If you are combining wood finishes and grains, bring them together with one bold, distinctive accent colour. Splash the hue on your walls and include it in accent pieces around the room to bring the space together.

TORLYS has a wide selection of flooring that will open up any space to make your home feel brighter. While darker floors tend to be bold and dramatic, pale floors are contemporary, airy and artistic.

Visit your local TORLYS dealer to see what we have to offer and to speak to a knowledgeable sales representative about our collections and to discuss what flooring would be best for your home. You can also browse online and order samples that will be delivered right to your home.

How to Choose the Right Floors – 8 Top Tips

Replacing the floors in your home takes time, research, and lots of thought. That’s why it’s important to make the right decision and choose an option that will look good and last for a long time. The goal is to invest well and not have any regrets in the future.

Remember these tips during your floor-buying journey:

1. Think Like an Investor

Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. Will I like these floors in five years?
  2. Will I like them in ten?
  3. Are they durable enough to withstand my active lifestyle and maintain their looks?

Think about how far your money will go. Spending a little less now could mean spending more in the future.

2. Know Your Stuff

Spend some time doing research. Research different flooring brands and compare their philosophies, practices, and products. Remember that flooring is more than what meets the eye and, while it is important it looks good, it’s also important you decide what features and benefits matter most in your home.

For transparent information, read online reviews and ask your network about their opinions for different products.

3. Understand Quality

Make sure you’re getting your money’s worth by knowing the answers to these questions:

  • How are the products made?

Is the company’s construction process accessible? If a company is transparent about its manufacturing process then they don’t have anything to hide.

  • Does the company provide good customer service?

Is there a way to get in touch in case of any problems? It’s important to have easy communication with a company you buy expensive products from.

  • Where is the product sold?

Products sold in big-box stores are generally all about price and aren’t as reputable when it comes to long-lasting performance.

4. Know Your Indoor Environment

Nobody knows your home’s indoor environment like you do. If your basement is very humid, consider waterproof flooring. TORLYS has several beautiful waterproof flooring options you can explore using the product filter on our website.

Try to understand the benefits of different certifications and their impact of compliance with strict environmental standards. For example, CARB (California Air Resources Board), NALFA (North American Laminate Flooring Association), and FloorScore®. Floors with these official seals meet or exceed the toughest indoor quality standards, offering peace of mind to homeowners.

Discounters tend to treat flooring as a commodity instead of as a key ingredient in your home renovation. Product malfunctions, especially related to indoor air quality, have recently come from discount flooring warehouses. That’s not an accident. A lack of concern for product quality and caring only about price leads to errors that homeowners end up paying for. Keep this in mind when making your purchase.

5. Visit a Reputable Flooring Store

Visiting a reputable flooring store can help you discover the right floors for you. Retailers who specialize in flooring know their stuff, so why not take advantage? Discuss cost, materials, and installation for a better understanding of what’s out there. Specialty retailers also work with experienced installers, which saves you time and trouble.

Find a trusted TORLYS dealer near you through the Dealer Locator on our website.

6. Buy a Brand Name

Some people consider brand names overrated. But the reality is, established reputations can take a lot of hard work to achieve. It takes many years of providing good quality, reliable products, and excellent customer service to build a strong name.

Choosing a company like TORLYS as your flooring provider means you can rely on your flooring for years, or decades, from the day of your purchase.

7. Discuss Warranties

Don’t believe everything a company says about its quality. A general rule of thumb is good quality products come with good warranties.

Things to look for in a warranty:

  • A Pro-Rating: If a brand’s warranty is prorated you don’t lose value for your product if you need it replaced over time.
  • A Satisfaction Guarantee: These guarantees mean that you get a trial run with the product before a full-blown commitment.

TORLYS Peace of Mind Assurance provides a superior warranty, assuring you peace of mind for years to come.

8. Visualize your flooring

Once you’ve done your research and settled on some flooring options, it’s time to understand how the floors will actually look in your home. Consider ordering samples of flooring so you can see the colours up close and in person. This also allows you to see the flooring under your lighting and against your existing décor.

TORLYS also offers helpful options like our Room Visualizer tool to help preview any TORLYS floor in a variety of scenes –even in your own space! The Visualizer provides a close estimation of what the flooring will look like once installed.

With these eight tips, you’re sure to make an informed, confident decision when it comes to your new flooring.  Through the taking the time to research and think through your decision, you’ll be happy with your investment for years to come. If you choose TORLYS, you can start browsing your options at our website today!

Different Types of Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl flooring is highly sought after and is one of the most developed types of flooring in the industry, but you may not know the differences and benefits of each type of vinyl. In case you need a refresher before your next flooring renovation, refer to our tips below to help you understand what type of vinyl flooring is best for your needs.

Types of Vinyl Flooring

If you’ve ever searched for vinyl flooring, you know that there are a variety of constructions and styles on the market. Most recently, Luxury Vinyl Flooring— which includes Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) and Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) have become extremely popular choices in both residential and commercial applications but there are different constructions and benefits, depending on the type you choose.

So how can you distinguish between these three types of vinyl flooring and decide which one is ideal for your project?

What To Know About Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Luxury Vinyl Tile is designed to imitate the look of stone, tile or concrete without the work, mess or hefty price tag of these materials. Luxury Vinyl Plank is a similar concept, removing most of the limitations of solid hardwood while providing a visual design that mimics the look of wood.

LVF is constructed with several layers, in either WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) or SPC (Stone Plastic Composite). Both options are waterproof and the construction design creates durability and suitability for a variety of spaces.

TORLYS carries both main types of Luxury Vinyl Flooring.  EverWood™ & EverTile™ fall under the WPC category and RigidWood™ falls under the SPC category.

TORLYS EverTile Elite in Smoke Canyon Colour in A Kitchen

What is WPC Flooring?

Wood Plastic Composite or WPC flooring has a core layer created from wood pulp.  WPC cores mean an extremely durable and comfortable floor, making it a popular choice for residential builders, home renovators, and consumers.  The thick vinyl top layer on TORLYS EverWood & EverTile collections allows for deep textures, resulting in stunning and realistic visuals.

TORLYS EverWood Floors Construction Diagram layers

Both the EverTile and EverWood collections are designed with multiple layers from the top down.  A cork underlay is included for additional warmth, comfort and sound insulation with the added benefit of Microban® antimicrobial product protection built-in to the cork backing to inhibit the growth of mould and mildew under your floors.

  1. A 0.5mm top-layer Top layer for ultimate resistance
  2. A decorative layer —this is where the design is printed. There are numerous options to choose from that mimic ceramic tile, concrete flooring and hardwood.
  3. The WPC core which is double thickness of industry standards
  4. Uniclic® joints on each side of the tile or plank for gap-free installations
  5. A Cork-Plus Blue Built-in underlay with Microban® antimicrobial product protection

What Is SPC Flooring?

While WPC remains a popular choice for residential uses, SPC vinyl is more suitable for a commercial environment or any area that will take a beating.  This type of Luxury Vinyl Flooring core is created from stone dust, minerals, and plastic composite.

TORLYS RigidWood Flooring Construction Diagram

SPC flooring still has multiple layers, but the core is more rigid, dense and heavier than the core in WPC flooring. Premium SPC also has additional PVC top layers and balance layers to ensure the firmness of each vinyl plank or tile. TORLYS RigidWood Premier & Elite collections are prime examples of premium SPC flooring. Its core consists of 8 layers including:

  1. TORLYS Maxx Finish top layer
  2. Heavy Duty Wear Layer (20 mil/0.55mm)
  3. Decorative Print Film in a variety of designs
  4. PVC Top Layer
  5. Sheet of Fibreglass
  6. Rigid Core with Patented Uniclic® Joint
  7. PVC Balance Layer
  8. FoamPlus™ Blue Underlay with Microban®

Similar to WPC flooring, SPC flooring in the RigidWood collection has Uniclic® technology to mimic the look of hardwood flooring. There’s also the attached FoamPlus™ Blue Underlay with Microban® technology for added protection. Because of the rigidity and overall durability offered in SPC flooring, it’s often used in commercial or high-traffic spaces.

WPC and SPC flooring at TORLYS comes with up to a 35-year residential warranty, meaning the product can be installed and enjoyed with confidence. Should a plank or tile come become damaged, there’s no need to replace the whole floor. Just use the exclusive TORLYS Bulldog™ to easily lift out individual planks and click a new one in its place.

  • A WPC core is ideal for residential use while an SPC core is more often installed in commercial projects

Hardwood vs Laminate Flooring: Which is Best for You?

Whether you are replacing existing flooring or on the hunt for the perfect floors in a new home, the choices can seem overwhelming. One of the most common questions revolves around the difference between hardwood or laminate flooring. Deciding which one is right for you can be a bit of a process, but looking at all the options available is worth it.

The Importance of Practicality

Practicality should be your priority when choosing your floors. Flooring should last in your home anywhere between 10-30+ years. Although looks are important, you need to make sure they’ll last and maintain their good looks without time-consuming cleaning and treatments.

When thinking about practicality, consider where in your home your new floors are going. Is it a cold room that needs a warm surface? Or a room that tends to get a lot of moisture? Do you need floors that can withstand all the wear and tear of your family and pets or a soft floor for your walk-in closet?

Hardwood vs. Laminate

Considering looks, feel and practicality, there are two great flooring options: hardwood and laminate. Hardwood is made of real wood, making it re-sandable and warm, while laminate is a durable, affordable option with real wood looks.

Kitchen with Provision laminate floors in Tipton Oak

What is hardwood flooring?

There’s no denying that hardwood flooring is beautiful. The natural colours and textures add warmth and value to any home. It will last a lifetime and you can re-sand TORLYS SuperSolid hardwood up to 4 times.

Plus, hardwood can handle whatever your family throws its way. TORLYS hardwood floors are durable and long-lasting, exactly what you’re looking for in a high-quality hardwood floor.

Hardwood floors are a classic flooring luxury. They have natural colours and textures, adding warmth and beauty to your home. They last a lifetime, only needing to be swept or lightly vacuumed weekly, with the option to re-sand and refinish with a new stain. Because of all these benefits, having hardwood floors also increases your home’s value since they’re the most wanted flooring option.

Here are some quick pros and cons of hardwood floors:

Pros

  • Many style options
  • Increased home value
  • Easy maintenance day-to-day maintenance
  • Last a lifetime

Cons

  • Cost
  • Tend to need to be refinished eventually
  • Susceptible to scratches, dents, and water damage

TORLYS Hardwood Options

What is laminate flooring?

You may think of laminate as the wood-looking flooring that is cheaper than hardwood. It was notorious for developing waves and peaks over time and left you with an artificial look and feel. But that’s the laminate flooring of days gone by.

Today, high-quality laminate floors outperform hardwood in a lot of areas. Most laminate flooring looks like wood but offers the durability of a non-wood product, making it a good flooring options for any room in your home, including wet areas.

The featured laminate flooring choices below are ideal for larger areas as they can now be installed transition free up to 50’ x 50’. Plus, the micro bevel on 4-sides creates a look that replicates authentic hardwood, so you’ll be the only one that knows they’re not real.

Take a look at these pros and cons of laminate floors for quick insight:

Pros

  • Durable construction
  • Waterproof and water-resistant options available
  • Real wood or stone looks
  • Low-maintenance
  • Affordable
