TORLYS knows that there is nothing quite like the companionship of a furry four-legged friend. They bring us an incredible amount of joy and happiness, and truly become valued members of our families. Owning a pet is a massive commitment and they are so much more than just animals. They require ample time, love, and attention to make sure they thrive! Optimizing your home for your fur baby is the first key step in providing them with a loving forever home.
Below are five tips TORLYS has outlined to make your home more pet friendly. Follow these tips and you can be sure that you’ve created a safe and welcoming space for your new friend!
1. Create a Dedicated Space for Your Pet
Like humans, pets need a small area to call their own. Pick a bed that will fit your pet’s size. Try to pick out a plush-looking bed for your pets’ comfort, and maybe even get a few pillows and a cozy blanket for additional comfort! You can place the bed in the living room, one of the bedrooms or set up an area in your den or family room. Try your best to pick out a spot that looks cozy! If you’re welcoming in a cat into your home, find a suitable place to place the kitty litter. Be sure to load up a basket full of toys while you’re out shopping for your furry friend!
2. Pet-Proof Your House
Cats and dogs but especially puppies are naturally curious animals and will put random objects in their mouth if they’re left lying around on the ground, which could be a potential choking hazard. Pet-proofing your space is a critical step to make sure your pet stays safe. It’s best to make sure all loose objects are put away prior to bringing your new pet home and its good practice to routinely tidy up objects such as clips, pins, remotes, bags, and clothes that may be lying around in easy to reach areas.
3. Use Stain Resistant Fabrics
We all know that pets can leave behind yucky messes every now and then. Being proactive is key if you want to avoid a costly repair job! Using stain resistant fabrics to cover furniture such as beds and couches will save you a lot of hassle and time down the road.
4. Choosing the Right Flooring

TORLYS knows that there’s nothing quite like the feeling you get in the middle of the summer! Whether it’s at a BBQ or by the beach, it’s time to embrace the summery mood. Colour has a known affect on human behaviours and moods, so it’s important to consider what shades and tones you’re incorporating in your space. If you’re looking for ways to incorporate that summer feeling into your home décor, look no further!
Pops of Colour
There’s nothing more summertime than bright, happy colours. Whether you prefer pastel shades or tend to gravitate towards neon, colour is the easiest way to brighten up your space.
Paint
Adding an accent wall or splashing out on an entire room is an instant way to refresh your space. The colourful paint colours can be outrageous and high impact, but even muted, pastel shades will add a pop to the room you’ve painted. Think about perhaps incorporating a light terracotta or yellow into your space to add a warm, sunny hue to a space.
Try out TORLYS Room Visualizer to test out different paint colours in a variety of scenes paired with our flooring selections.
Décor
Pillows: If you aren’t ready to incorporate colour via paint, seasonal décor for the summer is the easiest way to change the feeling in your space. Throw pillows in brighter shades instantly change a neutral couch to feel summery. Plus, you can incorporate patterned pillows like florals to bring some of the outside-in.
Art: Rather than changing a wall colour up, you might consider switching up what is on your walls instead. Incorporating art that uses bright, sunny colours or depicts the scene of a beach or a pool will remind you exactly what season we’re in!
Light Floors:
Perhaps you are looking to make a more permanent change to your space in order to add a brighter, happy feeling. Light floors open rooms up to make them feel bigger and brighter, creating a contemporary, artistic style to a home. If you’re looking for more tips on how to style light flooring, check out our previous blog here.
TORLYS has many light flooring options across the categories of our flooring. Use our Product Filter to sort TORLYS flooring by “Light” colours. Plus, we’ve highlighted a few options for you below.

Colour can completely change the look and mood of a home. If you’re looking for inspiration for a home renovation, it’s important to consider the latest design trends – including colour. Whether you choose “trendy” colours in your home design or go in a more classic direction, consulting design experts ensures your home will look fresh.
The PANTONE Color Institute
When it comes to colour, the industry agrees that the PANTONE Color Institute are the experts. For over 23 years, designers await the selection of PANTONE’s Color of the Year. This selection influences creative industries like interior design, but has a broad impact on things like product packaging.
PANTONE selects their Color of the Year after their colour experts conduct intense research. PANTONE’s experts examine the entertainment industry, view art collections and meet artists, travel, and understand evolving socio-economic conditions.
A New PANTONE Color Whose Courageous Presence Encourages Personal Inventiveness And Creativity.
This colour draws upon existing feelings and qualities that are wrapped up in the colour blue. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri encourages creativity and allows us to imagine possibilities that are available to us as we “rewrite our lives”, coming out of this period of isolation. This colour features a violet-red undertone and looks forward to the future with a new, modern perspective.
PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is also influenced by the way our physical lives have continued to be blended with the digital. PANTONE’s description of the colour says, “Digital design helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new color possibilities.”

This year, many of us are returning to spending holidays together with loved ones. The holiday season is right around the corner, so TORLYS wants to take the stress away from planning your holiday party.
Decorate for the Season
The holidays are an opportunity to decorate in a way that expresses your personality. Whether you decide to go with simple & sleek or kitchy & fun, you can’t go wrong with holiday décor. However, if the holidays aren’t a time to go a bit overboard, we’re not sure when you can!
Photo by Lynda Hinton on Unsplash
TORLYS Tips for Decorating
Start with what you already have – put out your existing decorations and take stock of what you still need. You’ll be surprised about all the gorgeous décor you’ve saved from years prior!
Utilize nature for easy and free decorations! Collect pinecones, fallen branches, and other pieces of nature to sprinkle throughout your home. Plus, you’ll bring the smell of winter into your home.
Set the table, put out glasses, and set up as much as you can ahead of time. This will reduce the amount of work you need to do the day of the party and serves as décor as your guests arrive!
Food and drinks are the star of any holiday party! But without proper planning, your menu can prove to be the most stressful aspect of the night. Instead, plan your party’s menu well ahead of time so you can spend some time with your guests.
Photo by Dorien Monnens on Unsplash
TORLYS Tips for Menu Planning
Don’t try to take on too much – Pick dishes you can prepare ahead of time and that you have experience cooking before. Only make a few select items on the day of the party to simplify your schedule.
Forget about trying to make custom cocktails for all your guests. Instead, let your guests serve themselves by making the drinks and mixers accessible. If you’d like to make something special, make a large punch ahead of time for everyone to enjoy.
Make appetizers that look good and serve as décor in itself. Think charcuterie boards, colourful candy or chocolates, and Christmas cookies in all their glory!
The end to hosting a holiday party is the eventual, unfortunate clean-up that has to take place. It might not be fun, but if you plan your cleaning process ahead of time, you’ll spend less time after your party is over.
TORLYS Tips for an Easy Clean Up
Save your storage boxes in an easy to access spot for your glasses, décor, etc.
Only worry about keeping the party rooms tidy. If your guests aren’t spending any time in some of your rooms, save their messes for later!
Place trash cans or recycling bins throughout your home in convenient spots so your guests will take it upon themselves to clean up.
TORLYS top tip for enjoying the clean-up process is use TORLYS EcoCare Cleaning Kit. Our complete all-in-one cleaning kit, TORLYS EcoCare is biodegradable and phosphate-free. TORLYS Ready-To-Use EcoCare Cleaner is a specially formulated floor cleaner solution for all TORLYS floors.

Every year, design experts predict the colour trends that will dominate the upcoming year. These trends are influenced by the fashion, interior design, and overall mood of the moment. Experts travel far and wide, visiting trade shows and doing extensive research to come up with the perfect colour. Once it’s announced, the colour of the year dominates interior design trends, and is splashed on walls and cupboards, featuring in furniture and accessories.
With that amount of pressure, it is no easy feat to predict the next year’s trending palette. This year, the process to determine the next big colour trends had to adjust as designers worked virtually to find the next major trend. The director of colour marketing and development at Benjamin Moore described this process to AD as “more of an inward-looking process than other years.”
Despite all the challenges they faced, the experts at Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams have announced their respective colours of 2022 – landing in quite a similar place!
Benjamin Moore – October Mist
“Make room for creativity. Evoking the silver-green stem of a flower, October Mist creates a canvas for other colours – and your imagination – to blossom.”
Benjamin Moore’s selection for colour of the year is October Mist, a gentle shade of sage green. This colour does not overwhelm, but allows for a multitude of colour combinations. The experts felt it was important that the colour was versatile to work in different spaces and colour palettes. They took inspiration from the stems of flowers that serve as the base to many different colour combinations.
“Soothing, subtle, and a perfect shade to freshen up any space. Evergreen Fog SW 9130 is a versatile and calming hue, a chameleon color of gorgeous green-meets-gray, with just a bit of blue.”
Nature and versatility inspired the experts at Sherwin Williams as well. They selected the shade Evergreen Fog as their colour of the year. This colour has many of the same characteristics as October Mist, prioritizing subtlety and working with several other colours. However, the tone of Evergreen Fog is slightly deeper and grey when compared to October Mist.

Dark floors create a dramatic, chic look throughout a home when they’re styled correctly. When done wrong, dark floors can make a room feel claustrophobic, heavy, and sometimes even dated. Choosing the right furniture, paint, and accents to go along with dark floors is essential to achieve the right overall look and feel in your home.
Furniture
Furniture pieces should typically be a few shades lighter than dark floors. To create a harmonized look, choose furniture that has the same overall undertone. Lighter matching furniture will create a sense of openness while complementing the look of the dark floors. Pale wood can also add visual contrast to break up your space.
If you’re not looking for any contrast and want a cohesive, elegant look throughout your house, choose furniture that matches the colour of your floors. For instance, if you decide on upholstered chairs, find some with wooden legs that match the colour of your floors and then freshen things up with a lighter fabric.
Choosing to mix and match your furniture is also an option. A dark dining room table with light chairs gives the best of both worlds, without distracting from the beauty of your dark floors. If you do mix and match, keep in mind that light furniture will stand out the most. Ensure that the lighter furniture pieces you choose are your favourite ones.
Walls
TORLYS Smart Floors Leather Tile in Novara Black
The standard design rule is dark floors, light walls. White or off-white paint will open up your room and give your dark floor a lift. You can maximize your white space by making your trims and mouldings thicker, allowing you to paint your walls a darker hue without losing any brightness.
Consider the furniture you own or plan on purchasing when deciding on your paint colour. If your furniture is already colourful, stick to neutral wall colours to avoid any clashing. For white furntire, paint your walls or an accent wall a bold colour, such as a bright green. Delicate touches from light hues like light blue or lavender can complement dark flooring and are a more subtle way to add some colour.
Accessories and Accents
A rug can add some colour and style to your space. It can act like a piece of art or centerpiece for your space. We recommend choosing the contrast between your rug and floors depending on how much you want your rug to pop from the rest of the room. If you need to brighten up a room, choose a light rug.
Leather, velvet and steel accents can complement a dark floor and give an area a soft, muddy or masculine feel. For window treatments, keep them light and translucent— allow as much natural light in a room with a dark floor to make it feel spacious. And in the kitchen, white cabinetry and countertops will make the room feel airy.
Brighten up your home with leafy plants and flowers. Put a vase of bright flowers on your kitchen counter or in the middle of your dining room table and your room will automatically gain some life.
Make sure to design to your space properly when you have dark floors to avoid a claustrophobic, dated look. With the right furniture, paint colours and accents, you can create a beautiful, modern space with dark floors.

The kitchen is the hub of the home, which means both its durability and looks are important. From family breakfasts to holiday dinners, everyone flocks to the kitchen, meaning your kitchen floors will be used more than any other floors in your home. With that in mind, choosing kitchen flooring is an important decision to make. TORLYS can help you find a floor that can withstand your everyday lifestyle and high foot traffic, while maintaining its good looks for years to come.
Kitchen Flooring Guide
Your kitchen sets the stage for the style and function of your space. When finding the perfect floor for your kitchen, keep in mind factors like lifestyle, comfort, durability, maintenance, and of course, your sense of style.
1. Lifestyle
If you spend a lot of time in your kitchen, consider the traffic flow and the amount of foot traffic your floors will need to withstand. Think about how much your kitchen will be used and whether your floor needs to be resistant to a great deal of wear and tear.
With your lifestyle and household schedules in mind, you might consider floors that are sound absorbent to prevent some of the sounds travelling from your kitchen throughout your home.
2. Comfort
Comfort is key for your kitchen floors. If most of your time is spent in the kitchen, you’ll want something that is soft and warm underfoot. Nobody likes how hard and cold porcelain tiles can be and how your back feels after standing for long periods of time. Surfaces that act as a natural insulator and have a little cushion to them are the best floors to improve your comfort.
We offer innovative flooring options that are high on comfort. TORLYS Cork floors look and feel great, plus they’re a renewable resource and natural insulator, making them an ideal choice for your kitchen. Our TORLYS CorkWood collections combine the beauty of hardwood, the durability of laminate, and the comfort of cork. TORLYS CorkPlus™ Blue underlay is also available with several TORLYS Smart Floors collections, offering natural air cushioning for comfort, sound absorption, and thermal insulation.
3. Durability
Spills, dropped items, and scratches can ruin lower quality floors that aren’t resilient to the demands of a busy kitchen. Durable floors that are waterproof, scratch and dent resistant can help keep your floors looking as good as new. Choose durable floors that will endure your active household and keep their looks for years to come.
4. Maintenance
Constant vacuuming, washing, scrubbing, and resurfacing are all tasks of the past. It’s become more important to consider how much maintenance you are willing to do on your floors. Unlike carpets, lower maintenance floors won’t hold on to dust and dirt. Instead, maintenance can be simple: use a clean, untreated dust mop or vacuum, wipe up spills quickly with a cloth or sponge, and clean as required with TORLYS EcoCare Cleaning Kit.
5. Style
And last, but certainly not least, consider your personal sense of style. If you’re doing a complete home renovation, you have a little more freedom when choosing your new kitchen floors. Create a few different mood boards to see what cabinet, countertops, flooring designs, and colour palettes work well together.
If you’re only replacing your floors, make sure to match them with your existing kitchen. Kitchen cabinets, floors and countertops tend to cover more surface area than your kitchen walls, so the colour and design of these three surfaces has a bigger impact on the look of your kitchen. Make sure to also consider the flooring throughout your house to create a cohesive design. This will create a flow through your home’s décor from room to room, making your space feel more open.
Choose a floor that complements your style and you’ll be happy for many years to come with your decision.

People tend to associate the warmer months with starting a household project but, the truth is, fall might be the best season to do renovations. Although the days may be shorter, there is plenty of daylight this time of year. With hot summers, cold winters, and wet springs, Canada’s fall weather won’t melt, freeze, or rain all over your tools and materials.
Why It’s Best to Renovate in the Fall
Beyond giving you more time to enjoy the summer, there are many benefits to renovating in the fall.
Weather makes a major impact on home renovations. Nobody likes spending a beautiful day sweating buckets while doing renovations or moving material in icy weather. Fall is still warm enough and without the aggressive weather conditions like high heat, strong wind, precipitation, frost, or humidity.
Timing
With fewer contractors available in the summer, your renovation could end up taking longer than expected if you don’t pick the right time. It’s also important to keep in mind product delays can happen, setting your timeline back and ruining your schedule. The benefit to starting renovations in the fall is that most contractors are entering their off-season and are more likely able to work on your preferred start date.
Pricing
The high demand for contractors in the busy spring and summer season means higher cost for goods and services. Materials can cost more in the spring and summer than in the fall and winter. You can save money by renovating in the fall since contractors might offer lower rates for their work during the off-season.
Seasonal Sales
There are many great sales to take advantage of in the fall. End-of-Summer sales, Black Friday sales, and the pre-Christmas sales can help save money or give you more room to spend on renovations.
Autumn means warm nights by the fire, baking cookies and watching movies with your loved ones. But before having people over, it’s worth sure updating your interior décor to something that makes you proud.
There are small, easy renovations that can be done in the fall that will make a big difference and refresh your space. If you choose to undergo bigger renovations, like adding a new bathroom or upgrading your kitchen, you can increase your home’s value and make it beautiful for years to come.
Upgrades to do around your home in the fall:
Paint your walls and your cabinets
Update your light fixtures
Buy new furniture, or even just some new throws and pillows
Replace your floors
Replacing your Floors in the Fall
Floors are the foundation of your home! If you are looking to undergo a flooring renovation this fall, remember that flooring is critical to set the tone for your home’s colour palette and sense of decorating style. Be sure to choose flooring that will both perform well in your home as well as look good.
